Figma's latest announcement đź‘€

OpenAI is officially a Figma subprocessor

So … we all woke up to an interesting email …

Roughly 10 hours ago, Figma announced that it’s adding OpenAI to its list of subprocessors. What does this mean? OpenAI is officially one of the chosen few, joining tech leviathans like AWS and Google as one of Figma’s third-party data processors. Basically, OpenAI will use your data on Figma’s behalf to train pre-existing Figma AI features and to inform new launches insofar as you don’t opt out under “Settings.”

If you don’t wanna to dig through your inbox, here’s what the email said:

Hi there,

Earlier this year, we shared our view on AI at Figma and the importance of being open with our community about our AI journey moving forward. Since then, we've been building practical, useful features for FigJam and Figma, with more to come soon!

To power our new AI features, we're adding OpenAI, L.L.C. (“OpenAI”) as a subprocessor. Figma uses subprocessors, which are companies that process data on our behalf, to help provide our core Figma services to you.

What this means for you:
We will only send the information you provide when using AI features. We also have an agreement that prohibits OpenAI from using any Figma customer data for training purposes.

If you would like to opt out of our AI-powered features, learn more here.

For more information about how we're using OpenAI as a subprocessor, visit our subprocessor page.

We look forward to continuing this journey along with you and the Figma Community.

Thanks,
The Figma team

To be fair, this isn’t all that surprising. Figma announced its acquisition of Diagram back in June and launched Jambot for FigJam in August. It’s pretty clear that their product team is busting their backsides to milk the AI trend for all it’s worth. Plus, security wise, it seems we don’t have all that much to worry about. Figma’s only using our input data on existing AI features for training purposes. I mean, if you’re willing to use an AI beta feature, you’re probably willing to train said beta feature.

Either way, this is just further confirmation that AI really is ~that chick~ when it comes to UI and front-end dev.

🔌 Featured plugins

Not that OpenAI necessarily needs the ego boost, but in the spirit of today’s newsletter, here are some OpenAI-powered plugins.

  • MagicFill: auto-populate designs with contextually relevant text and dummy data such as Dates, Names, and Order Numbers (especially helpful for dashboard and spreadsheet designs; requires OpenAI key to use)

  • FigGPT: generate copy with ChatGPT in Figma and FigJam

  •  Prowriting A.I.: align writing styles and check grammar using ChatGPT-4

  • GPT Stylist: generate color palettes using product descriptions —> includes 50+ prompt templates e.g. “A [insert type of design project] that conveys [insert desired mood or theme]”

  • DALL-E Bro: generate graphics and images using OpenAI’s DALL-E

🔬 Results!!

Here’s how you all did on last week’s pop quiz. Good thing is, most of you passed with flying colors.

❌ 31.25% of you said Image #1 was AI generated

âś… 68.75% of you said Image #2 was AI generated

Stay tuned for more pop quizzes in the future. Excuse me while I go search for an even harder challenge **mwhahaha**
